Last month I sent out my first newsletter, which discussed when knee space was required in Kitchens and Break Rooms. If you missed the newsletter, and would like to view it, click here. If you would like to unsubscribe, please scroll to the bottom of the screen, and click the link.
Today I will be taking a moment to review TAS/ADA requirements for dispersion of dining surfaces. This is an area that comes up fairly often in Plan Reviews. While many assume that as long as you have 5% of the seating "Accessible" you are compliant, that's often not the case.
Here is what the 2012 TAS says about dispersion of Accessible Dining Surfaces:
"Dispersed throughout" is some what vague. This statement left a lot to interpretation. TDLR published Technical Memorandum 2013-14 in June of 2013. Here is what it says about dispersion:
So if you provide different types of fixed or built in seating for dining, at least one of each type will have to comply. Possibly more depending on the the number of spaces available. In some cases, because of the requirement for one of each type, there will be more than 5%.
If you have any questions concerning compliance with the 2012 TAS, feel free to contact me. I offer Plan Reviews and Inspections for TDLR TAS compliance for a flat rate of $750 for projects under $5,000,000.
